Journal 68: What's His Problem?
Prufrock's poem gives us the readers a pretty interesting stream of thought that he had going through his mind. There seems to be a problem bothering him, a problem related to time and age. I think that his problem is the acceptance of change. The change of the era and the change from realism to modernism. He continuously questions himself if he should change his old ways, adapt to new ones for create a completely original one. Just like how the modernists were challenging old ideals and coming up with new ones to replace the old ones. His problem is he's worry of change and his reluctance for change. He like his life just the way it is, yet he finds it boring. He wants to leave but is afraid that the new life wouldn't suit him. What if the new life is worse than the one he has now? He's not worried about material things he is worried about his ways. Women are something in his life that he sees as unimportant and maybe a hint of cocky. In return he is afraid that the women laugh at him, at his bald spot. He seems to be quite troubled by the up coming change and is worrying about whether he should change or stay the same.
